Jenn Thornley –
From the Book Club Meeting:
The synopsis sounded intriguing and as though it would appear to a range of reading tastes as well as being captivating and an easy, enjoyable read. Sadly this did not fulfil its hopes for many of our group. Most felt Holly was initially a decent character but that “under the right circumstances, anyone can turn bad!” Each chapter was from a different persons point of view apart from Theo. We do not understand, why at crucial parts Theo was given no opinion. Some felt this style of writing ie chapters by different characters made it good while others felt it left the story disjointed and the characters appear shallow. Overall view was that he story could have happened anywhere in the world as no real focus on Thailand and that aspects were unrealistic eg being booked in a 5 star hotel but accepting to stay in a shared room hostel with no other options tried to be found.
The book was supposed to be a thriller /suspense but a majority felt this was not the case apart from what Caleb held over Saskia. Everyone felt the ending was a let down. Many of the group read to the end in the hope than it improved and sadly left feeling let down. A small number (very) people did enjoy the book though.
The overall rating was 2.5*
