Dracula

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a London house, he makes a series of horrific discoveries about his client. Soon afterwards, various bizarre incidents unfold in England: an apparently unmanned ship is wrecked off the coast of Whitby; a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck; and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the ‘Master’ and his imminent arrival.

In Dracula, Bram Stoker created one of the great masterpieces of the horror genre, brilliantly evoking a nightmare world of vampires and vampire hunters and also illuminating the dark corners of Victorian sexuality and desire.

  1. Jenn Thornley –

    From the book club meeting:
I think it’s fair to say we all struggled with this book at one point or another, with many of us questioning whether we would be able to make it to the end. However we did persevere and we’re glad we did. A lot of us enjoyed the book more than we thought we would and felt a sense of achievement now we can tick one of the classics off our list – it definitely hasn’t deterred us from reading more classics! The language was hard to understand at times, and it was clearly written in a different era, however we were impressed with the strong female lead in Mina and we liked the relationship that develops between the group.
Overall we gave Dracula 3.44 stars
